The Mill Garage (Duns) Ltd – A Brief History - Mill Garage started trading in 1974, when Jimmy Horne (Managing Director) a mechanic to trade opened his own premises, one of the first on the industrial estate in Duns. The garage is very successful and has been built its reputation on honesty, affordable rates and excellent workmanship. Jimmy from the 1970’s has been involved with rally driving and rally car preparations.

In 1984 Stephen Horne, Jimmy’s eldest son joined the company as body shop painter – Steve is now a Director in the company. The body shop plays a major part of the business – all types of repairs for customer and insurance work, motor homes etc – it is a fully equipped body shop with oven bake spray booth and all paintwork being guaranteed. Also in the body shop rally cars are built, full preparation, welding, roll cages, body/car modifications with suspension built.

In 1985 Michael Horne, Jimmy’s youngest son joined the company as mechanic in the workshop, Mike is a fully trained mechanic and now a Director in the company. The workshop is a Crypton tuning centre, Class 4 & Class 7 MOT’s, all types of repairs, servicing on all vehicles. Work from engine modification to a tyre changing facility is on site. Jimmy’s love of rallying rubbed off on Mike – and Mike’s successes include, The Jim Clark Rally and Scottish Rally Champion and will be doing Scottish Rally Championship 2008 with MK2 Escort.

In 1996 Jimmy saw the potential in converting motor homes, when a ‘motor home’ came in for repair, the internal workmanship of the vehicle left a lot to be desired, and Jimmy knew we could do better – he spent a lot of time and energy sourcing information on motor homes. All conversions are built on site – everything from putting on and painting roofs to match vehicle to all internal fixtures, fittings, soft furnishing, servicing and MOT’s etc – so we know the conversion inside and out! Customers can come on site at any time and see their conversion in progress – made to their requirements at anytime. The end result is a conversion we are all proud of – and one the customer can enjoy to the full.
